Welcome to the WAIPA 2050 site
Our population is growing...
In 2006, 42,501 people lived in the District - 13% more than the 1996 census figure. We anticipate growth will continue with an additional 27,000 people calling Waipa home by 2050 (that's about 2 more Cambridge's or 2 more Te Awamutu's and Kihikihi's). If we plan well then the things that we like most about the District can be retained and enhanced.
Waipa 2050 is the District's key planning response. The project includes a District Growth Strategy, Town Concept Plans, Environmental Strategy and the review of the District Plan.
The 'District Growth Strategy' is now complete. The Council is now seeking submissions on:
- Town Concept Plans for Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Kihkihi, Pirongia and Ohaupo;
- Environment Strategy; and
- Issues and Options for District Plan review
Submissions close on Town Concept Plans and Environment Strategy on 20th November 2009. Feedback is being sought on the District Plan review until 30th November 2009.
Message from the Mayor...
Waipa District Council is undertaking a major project to plan and manage growth within the District for the next 40 years. To achieve this in a co-ordinated and sustainable way, a District Growth Strategy is being prepared, the project is known as Waipa 2050.
Waipa 2050 will support Council’s vision being “The Home of Champions” – a great place to live, work and play.
We want to ensure that what makes our District special is valued and
maintained, a pattern is provided for future growth and that cost effective infrastructure is integrated with that growth.

It is estimated that a further 27,000 people will choose Waipa as their home in the future, which is why we need to ensure careful growth planning.
Waipa 2050 will also be working alongside a project called Future Proof, which looks at growth from a regional perspective. Future Proof is a joint initiative between Waipa and Waikato districts, Hamilton City and Environment Waikato.
I encourage you to have your say, and be part of the process to ensure Waipa District is the very best it can be – now and many years into the future
Alan Livingston
Mayor
